about

We document the testimonies of Jewish culture in Poland. We search, find and capture both forgotten and well-known places in photos and films. We discover forgotten stories and restore their memory. If you want to support us in action - write to us.

sztetl

Jewish communities and towns disappeared with the Second World War. 80-90% of the Jewish inhabitants of Poland were killed then. After the war, there was no one to rebuild the Jewish tradition, and the political climate was not favorable either.

We try to reach these places, document the present state of the pre-war Shtetls and show what is left of them - and in many cases not much.

what we do

We are lovers of history, culture and discoverers of secrets. We find and bring back interesting places and forgotten stories to the world of life. We undertake to show the difficult neighborly relations in the interwar and post-war period between Polish and Jewish residents.

where

The area of operation covers the entire territory of Poland. Ultimately, we intend to extend the documentation to the areas in eastern Europe - Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine.

partnership

Due to the size of the topic, we are looking for partners who can help us. The places we visit in many cases require intervention in the form of cleaning, removing branches, cutting grass or, in the case of non-existent cemeteries, putting up a symbolic plaque or matzevot.

how do we know

Despite the fact that we live in the 21st century, in the age of the Internet, it is difficult to obtain information on the many objects that have disappeared in urban spaces in recent years. In order to discover the truth and be honored to rediscover a forgotten object, you have to work hard - searching is the key.

cemeteries

After the war, around 1,200 Jewish cemeteries remained in Poland. Some of them survived in a sufficient condition, but most were destroyed by the German occupation forces and the communist authorities of the People's Republic of Poland.

Jewish cemetery in Krakow

Jewish cemeteries in Krakow

On that day, we managed to visit and document two Jewish cemeteries. The new Jewish cemetery, a huge complex with a huge number of tombstones, and the Remuh Jewish cemetery. We took hundreds of photos and prepared two videos from the necropolis available on YouTube.

synagogue in Krakow

Synagogue in Krakow

Krakow and its monuments create a beautiful landscape. It takes many weeks to visit the city. Visiting souvenirs of Jewish culture takes only a few days of intense walking. During this trip, we managed to visit two synagogues: the Remu Synagogue and the Old Synagogue.
